What’s here?
We all need a hobby, or an outlet. I have many, but this site is primarily for my Motorcycle related interests.
My story. At least a small part of it…
In my younger days, I was only able to afford cheap cars. I had several as a teenager. A few 60s Fords, a 72 Dart, 76 Buick/Isuzu Opel, and others. None of these were particularly reliable, so if I wanted to get from A to B, I needed to know how to keep them running. So, I had to become a shade-tree mechanic. I had several Chilton’s manuals for different cars and a rudimentary set of tools that could just barely meet my needs. It was an annoyance at first, but evolved into a sense of comfort in knowing what was going on with my cars and how reliable they were and were not.
Now, as an adult in need of things to take my mind off of my day to day responsibilities, I have returned to mechanical pursuits. Planes and boats are too costly and cars take too much room, so motorcycles it is. I have repurposed my walk-out basement into a bit of a shop space for this hobby and can just juggle one serious project with basic maintenance on my other bikes at any point in time.
For a multitude of reasons, I am focused on BMW motorcycles. Specifically, the air-cooled boxers known as airheads. These bikes are quite common, largely reliable, and still enjoy a wide enthusiast community. Parts are mostly easy to find and projects are nearly all manageable for a hobby mechanic. I currently have three airheads and a modern BMW, but this will change over time, I am sure.
What this site is and is not…
I intend to use this site as a record of various projects and activities related to my motorcycle interests. I will share things in a bit of a narrative that reflects the experience. So, it’s more of a story-telling initiative than a technical guide or how-to resource. I may delve into some of that here and there, especially if I encounter something novel or if I find that a specific aspect is not well documented elsewhere on the internet. Still, I don’t have the time to become a technical writer and am not interested in the frequently opinionated enthusiasts who like to argue about originality.
Having said that, I welcome comments and questions. As an autodidact, I do acquire knowledge at a reasonably deeper level than passive hobbyists. I am happy to share more details about my experiences if requested. The best way to do that is by simply leaving a comment on a post. If it’s more general, then you can reach me via the form below.
Happy wrenching.
