Back to the Motor (Red)

The holiday break has been good for making progress. All my current painting jobs are done. I spent some time tonight clearing the lift and moving the motor back. I am going to spend the next week or so putting parts back on the short block so I can mount it back into the frame. 

Today was also the first day to start using the new stainless steel hardware. I installed the oil pickup and the sump pan this evening. The pan is using new stainless steel bolts and wave washers. They add a nice touch. One thing about using stainless in aluminum, you must use anti-seize lubricant. This will prevent corrosion between the metals. It also acts to transfer more force on the threads, so torque values need to be adjusted downward.

For the pan bolts, BMW calls for 10nm of torque. That’s just over 7 foot-pounds and 88 inch-pounds. Since the anti-seize will increase the likelihood of stripping the threads, I am playing it safe and reducing the top torque to about 65 inch-pounds.
